Combustion Technology Pulls Out All the Stops for Mondipak

The new installation at Mondipak

Mondipak manufactures a range of corrugated board, cartons and the printing thereof.  They have a number of factories around the country.  Peter Smith is the General Manager for the  Mondipak Cape Town factory which is located in Kuils River.

The coal fired burner had to be moved to make way for the new oil fired burner that was due to be installed. It was decided that they should convert the existing coal fired burner in the factory to oil fired. Aside from a better production of steam, the conversion also reduces the company's output of greenhouse gasses.

The job was commissioned during December 2007 by Monidpak and Combustion Technology pulled out all the stops to ensure that no hiccups occurred and fortunately the project ran smoothly.

"There was no downtime experienced since the conversion was done during our routine maintenance time and Combustion Technology kept their delivery promise," explains Peter.

Mondipak were very pleased with the service levels they received from Combustion Technology again. This is the third conversion done for Mondipak around the country - the other two projects were in Nelspruit and Pinetown.

"With the Autoflame system there are obvious savings but we have experienced even further savings - we no longer require an operator and more importantly we have cleaner burning fuel, both in the operation and the environment. SO whichever way you look at it - we win!" laughs Peter.

Johannesburg Hospital Project Running Ahead of Schedule

Combustion Technology were awarded a multi-million Rand tender to upgrade the coal fired boiler house at the Johannesburg Hospital in Gauteng. This follows their pioneering leadership in their field of expertise, which started with the First Coal Conversion to Sasol Natural Gas in 2003, at African Products in Germiston, Gauteng.

We reported in our last newsletter that the project was just starting. Wecan happily report this month that it is right on track. Grant regularly visits the site and reports back on the progress and lots of photos!

"The coal dust particles in the atmosphere of the Boiler Room in the hospital were at totally unacceptable levels! We could only see this when we were trying to take some photographs," explains Grant.

"We'll be pulling out all the stops to ensure that the project is finished on time - the two old 16 Ton boilers have already been stripped out and taken from site and are due to be scrapped." The new boilers are being inspected by SA Inspectors in Italy before they set sail for South Africa.

"We are already running about two to three weeks ahead of schedule, which puts us in a really good position for the rest of the project!"

He says that the first boiler will be starting up early in May. We will be reporting on this major project on a monthly basis.

Visit our website to view all the photographs of the project so far.
