Combustion Technology Hosts Boiler Seminar in Somerset West

Grant and his staff with a few of the
delegates during one of the breaks

Once again, Combustion Technology hit the mark with a successful seminar on Wednesday 25 March 2009.

"Our clients are always very keen to  bring their running costs down and the boiler seminar addresses a number of ways in which this can be done," explains Grant Renecle, who once again presented most of the modules during the day.

The seminar, which is extremely interactive, was attended by many of Combustion Technology's big clients i.e. Chevron, Distell, Parmalat, Pioneer Foods, Profile Feeds and Exxaro Namakwa Sands.

For the first time in Cape Town the seminar was not held at the Combustion Technology offices in Retreat.  "The seminar has become too big to host it at our venue so we decided to go out of town to the Lord Charles in Somerset West."

All the delegates were extremely happy with the new venue, the speakers and the content.  This is according to the questionnaire that is sent out after the event when delegates are requested to be honest in their replies and criticism!

2009 is definitely the year for change - it was the first time Combustion Technology invited an outside company to contribute to the seminar.  Jacques Verwey of Delta Industries, a Bellville based company, gave a presentation on his company.  The company manufactures a product which reduces boiler fuel costs and eliminates steam trap maintenance, while at the same time increases production and reduces carbon emissions. Jacques mentioned that 30 - 40% of steam traps fail and that this can add up in terms of Rands and Cents. The presentation was extremely interesting and was very well received by all the delegates.

The next seminar will probably be held in Johannesburg during August - watch this space for more information!

Wine Farmers & Fruit Growers Exhibition at the CTICC
We will once again be exhibiting at the Wine Farmers & Fruit Growers Exhibition at the CTICC from 28 - 30 July 2009.

This exhibition is the largest agro/industrial exhibition in the Western Cape and is staged every second year.

This is the 11th exhibition and visitors are targeted from wine producers and fruit farmers of South Africa and attracts over 6000 winemakers, fruit farmers and brand managers, as well as exporters and marketers of both wine and fruit products.

Diarise to visit us on our stand D 22 between 10:00 and 18:00.

Table Mountain Blues Summit at Bloemendal

The Table Mountain Blues Summit took place in November 2008 at Bloemendal Wijnhuis in Durbanville.

The event, which is a marathon session of blues and rock music, was sponsored by Combustion Technology for the second year.  This year they erected a massive 8 metre banner in front of the stage at the concert.  "There was definitely no mistaking who the main sponsor of the day was!" laughs Grant.

This was the third blues festival with some of the country's hottest blues/rock artists entertaining the crowds throughout the day and well into the night!

As one review remarked "My favorite act of the day.......err all of them!"

The line-up included Gerald Clarke, Dan Patlansky, Southern Gypsy Queen and of course the Boulevard Blues Band.

Once we have the dates for the 2009 concert we'll let you know!

Mission Accomplished at Johannesburg General Hospital

The boiler on its way to the Hospital

One of our biggest projects in the last eighteen months has been the Johannesburg General Hospital Boiler Room.  In December 2007 Combustion Technology was awarded the multi million Rand tender to upgrade the coal fired boiler house at the Johannesburg Hospital in Gauteng.

We are pleased to announce that the project has now been completed and Combustion Technology is now on a 12 month service contract with the hospital.

The project included the conversion of the industrial coal fired boiler house to Natural Gas firing, with Egoli Natural Gas and provided a sufficient and reliable source of steam and also a reserve capacity for the winter months of 2008/9.  Two 16 Ton industrial coal fired steam boilers were converted to natural gas firing and two New 12 ton High Efficiency Garioni Naval Steam Boilers have been installed. All the boilers have been fitted with the most modern Boiler and Combustion Management Systems available on the market.

"We are very pleased that the project is now completed and we are very satisfied with the installations and the running of all the equipment on site," said Grant Renecle.

"The fuel efficiencies far exceeds expectations and proves our unique expertise in this field."

This 3D drawing is of the Boiler House and will be presented to the client.

 Challenging Times for Plant Managers

The Autoflame MK7 Unit

In 2009 we find ourselves in very challenging times as the global economy weakens and no one seems to know what the future holds, how long it is going to take and whether it will ever 'get back to normal'.

Financial crises are a temporary phenomena whilst protecting our planet is a duty we all have. The problem that this poses for most Plant Managers is whether it is possible to reduce running costs and emissions with minimal investment in a new plant.

Combustion Technology, together with Autoflame Engineering have the solutions to this very issue. The Micro Modulations System offers cost savings by burning less fuel more efficiently, which in turn equates to significant emission reductions and reduced energy costs!

The Micro Modulation System offer highly accurate microprocessor control of the combustion process that can be retrofitted to any burner.

Contact Grant Renecle at Combustion Technology for a free energy audit of your combustion system.

Clover Danone Takes Delivery
We reported in our previous newsletter about the order for a 15 ton boiler for Clover Danone.  We are happy to report that delivery took place during February 2009.

The logistics involved in delivering a boiler of this size are huge as you can imagine!  All departments and parties involved need to coordinate and communicate effectively to ensure that the downtime at the plant is kept to the absolute minimum.

A few of the logistics involved included coordinating arrival of the vessel in the harbour, Police transport to be arranged from Durban Harbour up to Johannesburg and the old boiler being removed and taken away from the site.  It took about two days to remove the old boiler from the site and get the new boiler in.

We will report on efficiencies and savings obtained with the new boiler in a later issue of our newsletter.

Official Handover
At the end of March 2009 our BEE partner attended a function in Johannesburg for the official handover of the Johannesburg General Hospital Project. Ridwan Taliep is seen in this photo shaking hands with Project Manager, Corrie van der Heever, of the Gauteng Department of Public Works, certifying the first handover of the Boiler and Burner Plant to the Department at the Johannesburg General Hospital.

Safety Issues - SANS 329
The SANS (South African National Standards) 329 is a standard that aims to regulate the applications of Thermo Processing equipment, including the safety requirements of combustion and fuel-handling systems.

Combustion Technology is part of the move to ensure that their personnel are trained in the SANS 329 course which certifies them to work on Thermo Processing Plants, in particular with oil and gas burners.

"It is essential that our technical people attend this course - we have already had eleven of our staff members go through this training," says Grant. "It is extremely important for clients to remember not to allow unqualified people to work on their equipment, both for safety and technical reasons. Every Oil and Gas Burner installed in the country has to have a  Certificate of Compliance in accordance with the OSH Act and SANS 329. This can only be issued by competent persons certified to SANS 329. Client must verify if persons working on their burners are SANS 329 qualified. If not they could fall foul of the Law."
